Tooth Extractions

Sometimes, the healthiest thing you can do for your smile is to let go of a problem tooth. Whether it’s severely decayed, damaged beyond repair, or causing issues with crowding—a tooth that no longer functions properly can affect the health of your entire mouth, and even eventually lead to other conditions and complications throughout the body.

At The Christiana Center for Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we provide safe, professional tooth extractions in a setting that puts your comfort first. Our experienced surgical team will guide you through the process with clear answers and gentle care, so you know what to expect and feel confident in your next steps.

Understanding Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is the process of removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It may sound intimidating, but it’s a common and thoughtfully planned procedure, especially when performed by an experienced oral surgeon.

There are two general types of extractions. A simple extraction is done when the tooth is fully visible and easy to access. Surgical extraction is needed when the tooth is broken, impacted, or located beneath the gum tissue. The type of extraction depends on the condition and position of the tooth.

Some of the most common reasons for extractions include decay that has reached the root, advanced gum disease, damage from trauma, overcrowding, or teeth that never erupted properly. Impacted wisdom teeth are a common example of this.

The Tooth Extraction Process

What to Expect Before Your Procedure

The first step of the process is an initial consultation. We’ll review your medical history, take any necessary images, and explain your options. This is also the time to talk through anesthesia choices. Whether you prefer local numbing or IV sedation—we’ll share what we recommend being the safest and most comfortable option for you.

Then, you’ll receive instructions before your procedure, like what to eat (or avoid), medications to take, and arranging a ride home if sedation is planned.

During the Procedure

The extraction itself is usually quick and straightforward. For a simple extraction, we gently loosen the tooth and remove it. In more complex cases, a small incision may be made to access the tooth below the surface. You’ll be fully numb or sedated, depending on the plan. Most patients are surprised by how manageable the experience is.

Recovery and Aftercare

Healing begins almost immediately after your procedure. We’ll place gauze over the site to help form a protective blood clot and control any bleeding, then send you home with detailed instructions and medication to keep you comfortable during the early recovery period.

Over the first 24 hours, it’s important to take things easy — rest, avoid strenuous activity, and give your body the time it needs to begin the healing process. Swelling is common and can be managed with cold compresses, especially during the first day. Stick to soft, cool foods and avoid anything that could disturb the surgical site, such as straws, smoking, or forceful rinsing.

Good oral hygiene plays a key role in recovery, but it should be done with care. We’ll show you how to brush gently around the area and when to begin rinsing to reduce the risk of infection. Most patients start feeling significantly better after a few days and are able to return to their normal routines with little interruption.
