Dental implants need solid support, and sometimes the upper jaw doesn’t have enough bone to hold them in place. That’s where a sinus lift can help. This procedure adds bone to the area near your sinus cavity to create a stable foundation for implants.
Over time, the bone in the upper jaw can shrink or weaken, especially after tooth loss. Without the stimulation of a natural tooth root, the bone may gradually resorb, reducing the available height needed for dental implant stability. Periodontal disease, prior surgeries, or an enlarged sinus cavity can also contribute to this loss.
For patients with naturally thin or diminished upper jawbone, particularly near the premolars or molars, a sinus lift may be recommended before moving forward with implants. In some cases, conditions like maxillary sinusitis or congenital bone deficiencies may also factor into the decision. By restoring bone height through a sinus graft, we create a healthier environment for long-term implant success.
A sinus lift is a common and carefully planned procedure that we perform right here in our office. After making sure the area is completely numb, we create a small opening in the gum to reach the bone in your upper jaw. From there, we gently lift the sinus membrane to make room for the new bone.
We then place bone graft material into this space to help your body build up the bone it needs. Once everything is set, we’ll gently secure the area and let the healing begin. Over time, the new bone naturally becomes part of your jaw.
There are two primary techniques we use for sinus lift surgery, depending on the amount of bone available and your individual needs.
The Lateral Window Technique is typically used when there is significant bone loss. This direct approach allows for greater access and visibility, making it ideal for complex cases. In most instances, dental implants are placed after the area has fully healed.
For patients with a moderate amount of existing bone, we may use the Crestal (Osteotome) Technique, which is less invasive. This indirect approach allows us to lift the sinus and place the bone graft material through the same site used for implant placement—often during the same visit.
The success of a sinus lift relies on quality bone graft material to stimulate growth and support the new structure. We use a range of biocompatible materials, each selected based on your unique treatment plan.
Each type of grafting material is discussed with you in detail, so you feel fully informed and confident in your treatment plan.
After your sinus lift procedure, it’s normal to experience some mild swelling or discomfort, which can be managed with rest and prescribed medications. We’ll provide detailed post-operative instructions to guide your recovery, including recommendations to avoid blowing your nose, sneezing forcefully, or engaging in strenuous activity while the area heals.
Antibiotics, decongestants, and pain relief medications may be prescribed as part of your aftercare. While every patient heals at their own pace, most will see significant progress over the course of several weeks. Full maturation occurs over the following months. We’ll monitor your progress closely and schedule any necessary follow-up appointments to ensure everything is healing properly.
As with any surgical procedure, sinus lift surgery carries a small risk of complications. The most common concern is a perforation of the sinus membrane, which can often be repaired during the procedure. Other potential risks include infection, graft displacement, or, rarely, long-term sinus issues.
Our team takes every precaution to minimize these risks and ensure a smooth, safe recovery. With advanced imaging, careful surgical planning, and experienced hands, we help reduce the likelihood of complications and support a successful outcome.
In some cases, a sinus lift may not be the only solution. For patients who aren’t candidates or prefer a different approach, we may explore alternatives such as shorter dental implants, angled implants that avoid the sinus cavity, or implant-supported dentures and bridges. In more complex cases, zygomatic implants, which are anchored into the cheekbone, can also provide a strong alternative.
We’ll walk through each of these possibilities during your consultation and help you understand which options align best with your goals and anatomy.
Determining whether a sinus lift is right for you begins with a comprehensive evaluation. We use diagnostic tools like CBCT scans and digital X-rays to assess your bone structure, sinus anatomy, and overall oral health. This allows us to plan with precision and tailor your treatment to your specific needs.
Because no two patients are the same, we focus on building an individualized care plan that’s both safe and effective. You can feel confident knowing you’re in experienced, compassionate hands.
