Preparing for your surgery is an important part of ensuring a safe procedure and a smooth recovery. At The Christiana Center for Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we’re here to guide you through every step—starting with clear pre-operative instructions.
These guidelines are designed to protect your health, avoid delays, and help you feel as calm and confident as possible heading into your appointment.
Once your surgery is scheduled, we’ll confirm the date, time, and specific pre-op requirements based on your individual health and the type of procedure planned. You’ll receive a reminder from our office as your appointment approaches.
We ask that you arrive 15 to 30 minutes early for check-in. This extra time helps us verify your medical information, review any updates, and answer any final questions you may have. If you’re unsure of directions or have last-minute scheduling concerns, please give us a call directly.
Your medical history plays an important role in how we plan and perform your surgery. Please make sure we’re aware of any changes to your health or any conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, or autoimmune disorders.
Some medications, like blood thinners or aspirin, may need to be adjusted or paused before your procedure. In other cases, like high blood pressure medications, we may ask that you take your usual dose on the morning of surgery with a small sip of water. You’ll receive specific instructions from your surgeon during your consultation.
If you’re ever unsure whether something should be taken or avoided, don’t guess—just give us a call.
If your surgery involves IV sedation or general anesthesia, fasting is required. You must not eat or drink anything (including water) for at least 6-8 hours prior to your procedure. This is critical for your safety while under sedation.
In some cases, clear liquids may be allowed up to two hours before your appointment. We’ll let you know if this applies to you.
Diabetic patients may have unique needs depending on the timing of surgery and their usual medications. Please talk with your primary care doctor in advance and keep our team informed of any instructions you receive.
To reduce the risk of complications, we also ask that you avoid alcohol and tobacco products for at least 24 to 48 hours prior to surgery.
On the day of your surgery, it’s important to brush and floss your teeth like normal, but avoid swallowing any water. Maintaining good oral hygiene helps reduce the risk of infection.
On the day of your procedure:
These steps allow our team to focus on your safety and ensure everything goes smoothly once you arrive.
For your safety, you must have a responsible adult accompany you to your appointment and drive you home if you’re undergoing any form of sedation. You will not be allowed to drive yourself or use public transportation.
We also recommend having someone stay with you for at least the first 24 hours after surgery. You may feel groggy or tired, and having someone nearby can offer peace of mind and assistance if needed.
Before your procedure, make sure you’ve completed all required consent forms and pre-surgical paperwork. You can access these documents through our secure online Patient Portal or complete them in person at the office. Don’t forget to bring a photo ID and insurance information to your appointment.
If you’re experiencing any symptoms such as a fever, persistent cough, sore throat, or other signs of illness in the days leading up to surgery, call our office. Your health is our top priority, and we may need to reschedule if you’re feeling unwell.
